4.3.3.3. Acid test for gold plating (see 3.7.3). Acid testing shall be performed on a
completely fabricated buckle as follows:
Place a drop of nitric acid of not less than 1/16 inch in diameter on three different spots
on the front face of the buckle allowing the drops to remain for not less than one (1) minute
during which time the surface of the buckle shall be inspected to determine compliance with
the requirements of 3.4.3 and 3.7.3. A minimum of two spots must withstand the acid test.
The test acid shall be applied at room temperature (60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit) and shall
consist of a solution containing 50 percent by volume of chemically pure nitric acid (specific
gravity 1.42) and an equal volume of distilled water.
4.3.3.4 Test for hard soldered joints (see 3.7.4). Hard soldered joints to be tested shall
be placed in an oven maintained at 1075 degrees Fahrenheit ± 5 degrees Fahrenheit for
not less than 15 minutes. While at this temperature, the items shall be lifted by the smaller
of the soldered components and the joints examined. The soldered areas shall not
separate.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as
specified in the contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of materiel is to be
performed by DoD personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging
activity to ascertain requisite packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are
maintained by the Inventory Control Point's packaging activity within the Military
Department or Defense Agency, or within the Military Department's System Command.
Packaging data retrieval is available from the managing Military Department's or Defense
Agency's automated packaging files, CD-ROM products, or by contacting the responsible
packaging activity.
6. NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be
helpful, but is not mandatory.)
6.1 Intended use. The buckles covered by this specification are intended to be used as
an accessory to the uniforms worn by officers and enlisted personnel of honor units and the
Army Band during formal military ceremonies.
6.2 Acquisition requirements. Acquisition documents must specify the following:
a.
Title, number (including revision letter), and date of this specification.
b.
Type of buckle required (see 1.2).
c.
Specific issue(s) of other documents referenced (see 2.3).
d.
Specific drawings referenced (see 2.2).
e.
Whether a standard sample is to be furnished (see 3.1).
f.
When/if a first article is not required (see 3.2).
g.
Special requirements for or exceptions to testing and inspections (see Section 4.)
6.3 First article. When first article inspection is required (see 3.2), the contracting
officer should provide specific guidance to offerors whether the item should be a
