possible provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance
requirements and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs.
3.4 Materials. Materials shall be as specified herein.
3.4.1 Copper base alloy. The copper base alloy shall be roll polished, free from pits,
scale (including red oxide), dents, nicks, cracks, scratches, segregations, and foreign
inclusions that can not be removed in later processing. When tested as specified in 4.3.1
the chemical composition of the copper base alloy shall be as specified in Table I.

3.4.2 Nickel underplating. Nickel for underplating shall be nickel normally used in
commercial practice.
3.4.3 Gold for plating. Gold for plating shall be 22 karat or as specified by the
contracting office.
3.4.4 Solder.
3.4.4.1 Hard solder. Hard solder shall be a silver alloy solder having a melting point of
not less than 1075° Fahrenheit (561.7° Celsius).
3.4.4.2 Soft solder. Soft solder shall be a lead-tin alloy having a melting point of not
less than 375° Fahrenheit (190.58° Celsius).
3.4.5 Screw post and thumb nut. Screw post and thumb nut (used on Type II buckles
only) shall be fabricated from any type brass and shall conform to the details and
dimensions of TIOH Drawing B-6-6 and B-6-6A (Figures 1 and 2).
3.4.6 Rivets. Rivets (used on Type II buckles only) shall be made from any type brass
and shall be solid or hollow.
3.5 Design.
3.5.1 Type I buckle. The embossed buckle shall be an exact replica of the design on
the Government loaned hub (see 3.6), from which the contractor's working die shall be
extracted. The working die shall be tooled and polished to remove any dents, nicks,
scratches, or other imperfections.
3.5.2 Type II buckle. The insignia (device) shall be an exact replica of the design on
the Government loaned hub (see 3.6), from which the contractor's die shall be extracted.
