3.6 Government loaned property. Hubs for Type I and Type II buckles shall be loaned
by the Government and shall be used to make the contractor's working dies. The loaned
hub(s) shall be returned upon completion of the contract or as directed by the contracting
officer.
3.7. General construction.
3.7.1. Stamping, trimming, and piercing. Buckles and insignia shall be struck in a
manner to insure a well-defined die struck edge. When applicable, embossed and/or
pierced areas shall be trimmed to the die struck outline. All edges shall be clean and
smooth, free from burrs, drag, step, and rough edges. The trimming operation, when
applicable, shall not damage or distort the design.
3.7.2 Nickel underplating. Nickel as specified in 3.4.2 shall be plated using a thickness
of not less than 0.00025 inch. The plating shall be continuous and unbroken over the entire
plated surface. There shall be no cut-through, shaded, peeled, or blistered areas. Testing
shall be as specified in 4.3.2.
3.7.3 Gold plating. All gold plating shall be by electroplating methods using gold
specified in 3.4.3. The plating shall be continuous and unbroken over the entire plated
surface. There shall be no cut-through, shade, peeled, or blistered plating. Plating of
screws, thumb nuts, or rivets shall not be required. Testing shall be as specified in 4.3.3.3.
3.7.4 Soldering and electronic fusion. Soldering shall be accomplished using solder
specified in 3.4.4.1, 3.4.4.2, or by electronic fusion. Soldered areas shall be clean, smooth,
strong, and free from burned or reduced areas. Excess flux or solder shall be removed.
Testing of hard solder shall be as specified in 4.3.3.4.
3.8 Details of construction for the Type I buckle. The embossed buckle shall be
constructed in accordance with the details and dimensions shown in drawing B-6-32
(Figure 3). The buckle shall be made from red brass specified in 3.4.1.
3.8.1 Use of forcer. A forcer shall be used to bring up the embossed design of the Type
I buckle. When a forcer is used, the back of the buckle shall have no sharp or rough edges
or sharp corners. The impression of the forcer shall be regular and symmetrical upon the
face of the buckle. Sufficient metal shall be left near the edges to assure a clean and
smooth trimming.
3.8.2 Dapping. The dap for the Type I buckle is built into the Government hub.
3.8.3 Finishing. Finishing shall be accomplished prior to assembly. All components of
the Type I embossed buckle shall be nickel underplated and gold plated using materials
specified in 3.4.2 and 3.4.3. The face of the buckle shall be matte finished with polished
highlights. The face of the catch plate shall be mirror-like polished. The plated color/shade
of all finished components of the Type I buckle shall match.
3.8.4 Type I assembly.
3.8.4.1 Buckle assembly. The buckle assembly shall consist of the embossed buckle, a
loop with sliding bar, and a hook. The loop with sliding bar and the hook, like the
embossed buckle, shall be fabricated from red brass specified in 3.4.1 to the details and
