COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TAPE, MEASURING (DRESSMAKER’S)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description (CID), for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers a 6-foot measuring tape used in sewing operations.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Salient characteristics. The tape shall be either a woven or non-woven fabric completely covered with a synthetic resin or vinyl coating, or a spunbonded olefin made from high-density polyethylene fibers. The tape shall be from 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1.3 to 1.9 cm) wide; 6 feet (1.8 ml long, minimum; and graduated in permanently marked increments of both edges of each side. One side shall be marked in inches and the other in centimeters and the inch and centimeter graduations shall be clearly numbered. Each end of the tape shall be finished to prevent raveling; however, the finishing technique used shall not obliterate more than 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) of the end markings. The tape shall be accurate to within 1/16 inch (0.16 cm) within any 1 foot (30.5 cm) section. Total accumulated error for the entire length of the tape shall not exceed 1/8 inch (0.32 cm).
2.2 Workmanship. The measuring tape shall be free from defects which affect appearance or serviceability and imperfections such as indistinguishable markings, shortness of length, improperly finished ends, an accumulated marking error greater than 1/8 inch (0.22 cm) or any missing, damaged, or non-conforming component.
2.3 Measurement system. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The metric values stated in parentheses are for information purposes only.
2.4 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, providing they fall within the tolerances specified and all other requirements of this document are met. If a product is manufactured to metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in the inch-pound units, a request should be made to the contracting officer to determine if the product is acceptable.
2.5 Standard commercial product. The measuring tape shall, as a minimum, be in accordance with the requirements of this commercial item description and shall be the manufacturer’s standard commercial product. A standard commercial product is a product which has been sold or is currently offered for sale on the commercial market through advertisements, manufacturer’s catalogs, or brochures and represents the latest production model.
